The State Election Commission today stayed the Andhra Pradesh Government move to bring down the State VAT on petrol by three per cent.
It felt that this would influence the voters as the by-elections to 18 Assembly and one Parliamentary constituency are slated to be held next month.
If this State proposal goes through, a litre of petrol would cost about Rs.1.50 lesser. After the recent hike of Rs 8.36 a litre, petrol is priced at Rs 81.44 in the Andhra Pradesh.
According to sources, the Chief Minister, Mr N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, directed officials of the Commercial Taxes department to take up the issue of bringing down taxes on petrol in the State and pass on the benefit to people.
