The CBI on Friday told the Supreme Court that it is ready to take charge of the investigation into the mysterious death of Sadiq Batcha, an aide of former Telecom Minister, Mr A. Raja. Mr Raja is an accused in the 2G spectrum allocation case.

Representing the CBI, senior advocate Mr K.K. Venugopal told the apex court that the CBI has expressed its willingness to take over the probe. The CBI also informed that the Tamil Nadu Government had also favoured a probe into the incident by the CBI.

The court then directed the Additional Solicitor General Ms Indira Jaising to take instructions from the Centre and inform it by April 4 regarding the issuance of a notification on handing over the probe to the CBI.

On March 29, the apex court had agreed to hear the plea by the petitioner NGO Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) for a CBI probe into the death of Batcha. The court had then asked the CBI to go through the CPIL's plea.

The CBI had not only questioned late Batcha regarding the 2G scam, but had carried out searches at his residential and official premises.

Last month, Batcha was found dead in mysterious circumstances at his Chennai residence. His wife reportedly claimed that he committed suicide because he was not able to cope with the pressure of the 2G investigation.
