The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) and Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI), Delhi-based statutory bodies under the Ministry of Environment and Forests, have issued show cause notices to Moonlight Circus following complaints that animals owned by it were being left hungry after the Circus owner's arrest in Margao in south Goa recently for alleged rape of a minor girl and human trafficking.
The show cause notices have been issued to many other circuses too following investigation and demand by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and others that action be taken against them for cruelty to animals.
Manilal Valliyate of PETA India said the CZA issued notices on February 14 last, whereas AWBI notices were issued on December 11, and January 23.
Poorva Joshipura, CEO, PETA India, said the government bodies issued notices to circus owners following a nine-month-long investigation of 16 circuses conducted across India by a team, including representatives from PETA India and Animal Rahat as authorised by the AWBI.
