The CPI (M) has condemned the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs’ decision to open up coal mining to companies in the private sector. The party alleged that the move is part of the aggressive pursuit of neo-liberal economic policies by the Centre. A statement by the CPI (M)’s Polit Bureau said till now the private sector was permitted to mine the fossil fuel only for captive use and surplus coal needed to be sold to Coal India Ltd at the notified price. It added that the decision undermines the energy security of the country and also compromises with the safety and security of workers in coal mines.
