Retirement fund body EPFO on Monday decreed that the Universal Account Number (UAN) is mandatory for all employers covered under the Employees Provident Funds and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 1952. “We have notified the draft order to make UAN compulsory for all organisations covered under the EPF & MP Act,” Central Provident Fund Commissioner KK Jalan said.
Launched in October last year, the UAN remains portable throughout the lifetime of an employee, who doesn’t have to apply for a PF transfer when changing jobs.
It is even more beneficial for construction workers, who often change contractors.
“The deadline for completing the formalities is August 25 after which action will be taken under the powers given to us by the EPF Scheme, 1952, and other applicable laws for failure to comply with the order,” Jalan had said last week.
The EPFO had issued over four crore UANs to employers across India in July last year.
