The country today has 77 private universities with Rajasthan topping the list with as many as 16 such institutions, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. “According to available information, as on date, there are 77 universities established by state legislatures without public funding,” the Minister of State for HRD, Ms D. Purandeswari, said during Question Hour.
She said State legislatures were competent to establish private universities, with or without public funding. Rajasthan has 16 universities, seven of them in the State capital, Jaipur. Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat have 11 private universities each. Himachal Pradesh has the third highest private universities in the country at nine.
