The tech show, simply known as IFA, held every year in Berlin, has officially begun today. Preceding the show, several companies have held their press events and showcases for the media.

As the show gets underway, the products on the show floor include everything from wearables to monster gaming machines, from apps to snazzy smartphones, from smart ovens to this year’s big flavour — mixed reality based headsets based on Microsoft’s Windows platform.

Already generating a lot of buzz is Acer’s Windows Mixed Reality Headset HC102, which puts the user in a world where he or she can interact with objects, such as ghosts in a Ghostbuster environment. The wearable is based on Windows and must be connected to a PC. It projects holographic objects that can be manipulated using controllers but also uses Virtual Reality for a completely immersive experience. Lenovo has also showcased its own Mixed Reality headset, the Explorer, which uses dual cameras and motion tracking to immerse the user in an alternative world.

Meanwhile, Samsung’s recently launched Note 8 is on show at IFA as is the next version of its fitness tracker, Gear Fit 2 Pro. This bracelet style tracker has always had plenty of tracking features, all showing on its ultra bright screen wrap-around screen, but now comes with many improvements including GPS tracking, heart rate monitoring and water resistance that means you can take it for a swim and have your movements tracked.

The V30 smartphone, from LG, is another product drawing an eager media crowd at the show. This device stands out because of the almost non-existent edges making the display look seamless. This glass and metal device has a 6-inch screen that’s sharp at 1440 resolution. The phone not only looks beautiful but has strong audio capabilities for music lovers.

Sony has unveiled another digital camera from its RX series. The RX0 remains very compact but is now water resistant as well. Sony Mobile also showed off three new smartphones: Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact iand Xperia XA1 Plus. The flagship XZ1 will come with enhanced HDR and support for hi res audio. Users will also be able to play with scanning 3D objects and create their own interesting 3D stickers, wallpapers or even print to a 3D printer.

The following week will see more products roll out at IFA, always an exciting time in Berlin.
