Spot turmeric prices increased by Rs 350 a quintal as growers brought quality fine variety turmeric for sale.
“Of 9,600 bags that arrived on Friday at the Regulated Marketing Committee and Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, almost all were fine variety turmeric.
“So traders who verified the lots quoted a higher price. Both the finger and root varieties increased by Rs 350 a quintal.
“If the same quality turmeric arrives for sale on Monday, prices may go up further,” said Mr R.K.V. Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.
Traders said that out of their total purchase of turmeric, 20 per cent has been granted to powder units, remaining to the godowns as stock. The Salem Hybrid turmeric variety fetched Rs 5,459 a quintal.
At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association Sales yard, the finger variety was sold at Rs 2,316-4,174 a quintal and the root variety at Rs 2,289-3,865.

The finger variety was sold at Rs 3,610-5,459 a quintal and the root variety Rs 3,364-4,200 a quintal. Of 1,493 bags that arrived, 1,047 were sold.
At the Regulated Marketing Society, the finger variety was sold at Rs 4,172-4,749 and the root variety at Rs 3,988-4,533.
All the 1,964 bags of turmeric kept for sale were sold.
At the Erode cooperative Marketing Society, the finger variety fetched Rs 3,699-4,638 and the root variety Rs 3,215-4,284. About 1,330 bags of turmeric were sold as against the arrival of 1,360.
