The International Copper Association has proposed standardising parameters for fire-survival cables.
“Several cases show people shift to aluminium for fire survival cables. They are supposed to provide electricity in emergency situations. The melting point of aluminium is 660 degree centigrade,” Managing Director at International Copper Association, India, Sanjeev Ranjan, told BusinessLine .
The melting point of copper is 1,085 degrees centigrade. Most short-circuits and electrical fires are caused because of melting of cables.
“There are no standards for fire-survival cables that are followed in India. We are working with the Bureau of Indian Standards on this. We have prepared the first draft standard. It has been submitted to BIS… These standards will get reviewed and comments will come. After this it will be out for wider public consultation,” Ranjan said.
“Our aim is to have standardisation for fire survival cables in terms of insulation and conductors,” he said.
