Strong demand from blenders lifted the prices of good liquoring tea varieties at Kochi tea auctions this week.

The good liquoring tea market was dearer by ₹3-7, and sometimes more, as the sale progressed, especially for powdery grades. However, plain browner teas were irregular and witnessed some withdrawals. In sale no 13, the quantity on offer in CTC dust was 6,87,000 kg and the demand from exporters was subdued, said the auctioneers, Forbes, Ewart & Figgis.

However, the price surge was not witnessed in the orthodox market, where it barely remained steady. A small quantity of orthodox dust sold was absorbed by exporters and upcountry buyers. There was improvement in arrivals at 10,000 kg compared to the previous week.

In Cochin CTC dust quotation, good varieties fetched ₹123-173, mediums quoted ₹109-155 and plain grades stood at ₹99-117.

In the leaf category, the market for Nilgiri brokens in orthodox grades was firm to dearer and the quantity on offer was 1,08,000 kg.

In CTC leaf, the market for good liquoring brokens and Fannings barely remained steady and tended to ease.

The quantity on offer was 52,000 kg.
