Pepper markets continues to slip on continued availability of cheap imported pepper.
While many of the ports are levying 8 per cent duty on a minimum import price of $6,000 a tonne for Sri Lankan pepper, some of the south Indian ports are reportedly charging duty on the actual purchase prices, trade sources told Business Line . This phenomenon is helping the importers to sell at much lower rates, they said.
On the terminal market seven tonnes of high range pepper were traded at ₹450 a kg.
Spot prices slipped further by ₹100 a quintal to close at ₹44,800 (ungarbled) and ₹46,800 (garbled) a quintal.
Indian export prices were at $7,550 a tonne c&f for Europe and $7,800 a tonne c&f for the US.
