Tea growing regions in the Nilgiris received “useful” showers on Thursday night and in the wee hours of Friday.

According to Nilgiris Collector P Sankar, Kodanad recorded the highest rainfall in the district of 59 mm in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Friday. The rain was widespread over the tea plantations in the district.

“We received 4 cm rainfall last night. We had applied fertilisers and other relevant inputs after the last rainfall received three weeks ago. The present rain will help the fertilisers to blend with the soil and roots and induce healthy growth of tea leaves,” G Udayakumar, Director, Avataa Beverages, told BusinessLine .

“After the last rains, the arrival of manufactured tea for auction has been increasing.

“With the present rains, we hope that the volumes coming up for auctions will raise along with quality improvement. The present concern is about the falling trend in prices. At today’s auction, the average price dropped to ₹101.27 a kg — the lowest so far in 2017,” said Ramesh Bhojarajan, Chairman, Coonoor Tea Trade Association.
