A strong demand from blenders lifted prices of good liquoring tea varieties at Kochi Tea auctions this week.

The good liquoring tea market was dearer by ₹3 to ₹7 and sometimes more as the sale progressed, especially for powdery grades. However, plain browner teas were irregular and witnessed some withdrawals. In sale no 13, the quantity on offer in CTC dust was 6,87,000 kg and the demand from exporters was subdued, the auctioneers Forbes, Ewart & Figgis said.

However, the price surge was not witnessed in orthodox market and it barely remained steady. A small quantity of orthodox dust sold was absorbed by exporters and upcountry buyers. There was improvement in arrivals at 10,000 kg compared to previous week.

In Cochin CTC dust quotation, good varieties fetched ₹123-173, mediums quoted ₹109-155 and plain grades stood at ₹99-117.

In leaf category, the market for Nilgiri brokens in orthodox grades was firm to dearer and the quantity on offer was 1,08,000 kg. Whole leaf was irregular and lower. However, well made medium brokens was steady to firm. There was improved enquiry from exporters.

In CTC leaf, the market for good liquoring brokens and Fannings barely remained steady and tended to ease. The quantity on offer was 52,000 kg.

In dust varieties, Monica SFD quoted the best prices of ₹173 followed by Murugan SFD at ₹170. Both Chamraj FOP and Chamraj FOP-S (Green Tea) came to the top in leaf category quoting ₹431 followed by Sutton OP at ₹403.
