A total of 208 applications were received at the education-loan mela held at the Collectorate, organised by the District Consultative Committee, here recently.
Twenty-four banks, both nationalised and private, participated. The District Collector, Mr C. Kamaraj, speaking on the occasion, said 8,812 people got loans to the tune of Rs 134 crore this year. He reminded that students should sincerely pay back the loans, however small it might be. Students from rural areas find it difficult to raise money for higher studies, and prompt repayment would encourage banks to give more loans, he added.
The Lead Bank Manager, Mr K.N. Subramanian of Canara Bank, said all eligible candidates can get loans and there was no upper limit for it.
