There were no old customers or film-stars to cut ribbons to inaugurate Bank of Baroda's mid-corporate branch here last week, the fourth in the South. Just as the Master of Ceremonies announced that the staff would take them through the bank's offerings after the routine inaugural function, many began to leave; the photographers headed to the exit.

“Hi, I'm Kuber, the God of Wealth!” thundered a young lady from the stage. Heads turned.

Hi, I'm Indra — King of Gods, said another, before Narada, the divine sage, made her entry.

The people returned to their seats.

The trio began to discuss about the troubled times in Heaven with Kuber talking of depleting resources due to inflationary pressures, rising interest costs and power outages.

The guests looked at each other quizzically. The Gods were facing financial problems. Narada was foxed for a solution.

He turned to Bank of Baroda for help.

The bankers told the Gods where to invest: in fixed deposits, recurring deposits, NRE accounts (remember they are not residents of India), mutual funds...

The same advice the bankers have been giving humans.

The Gods were pleased. Peace reigned. Prosperity ensued.
