INS Sumedha, the Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel designed and built by Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL), was formally commissioned into the Indian Navy by Vice-Admiral Anil Chopra, Flag Office and Commander-in-Chief, East.
“GSL has embarked upon a massive modernisation programme aimed at creating new facilities and infrastructure while augmenting the existing ones,” said Shekhar Mital, Chairman and Managing Director, while speaking at a ceremony to formally commission the vessel into the Indian Navy.
INS Sumedha will help meet the increasing requirement of the Indian Navy for undertaking ocean surveillance and surface warfare operations to prevent infiltration and transgression of maritime sovereignty.
The vessel is suitable for monitoring sea lanes of communication and defence of offshore oil installations.
