The IT Association of Andhra Pradesh (ITAAP) has urged the State government to reduce power tariff for IT units from the present ₹10 per unit to ₹5 per unit to attract more investment into the sector.

The plea was made by the new president of the association, RL Narayana, at a media conference here on Friday. He said the national average was only ₹5 per unit and the AP government should also reduce the tariff to that level. He said the association was working in tandem with the State government in developing Visakhapatnam as a major IT centre and also to take IT to other towns and cities in the State including the new capital, Amaravati.

Narayana said IT infrastructure should be strengthened in the State and plug-and-play capacity should at least be doubled. Bandwidth cost should also be reduced.

O Naresh Kumar, the advisory council chairman of the association, said the Centre should reduce GST from the present 18 per cent to 5 per cent to promote the domestic IT industry and the income tax (deducted at source) should be cut from 10 per cent to 2-3 per cent. If possible, the Centre should declare Vizag as the IT Investment Region (ITIR) or at least offer major incentives in lieu of it.

Lakshmi Mukkavalli, the chairperson of the Vizag chapter and the Managing Director of Patra India, said the State Government should take up low-cost, medium cost housing projects to promote the sector.

Ravi Eswarapu, the outgoing president, and others spoke.
