Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram both reported a provisional voter turnout of 75 per cent till late evening, Election Commission officials announced here on Wednesday.

In the last Assembly elections in 2013, Madhya Pradesh had reported a voter turnout of 72.13 per cent, while that of Mizoram was 83.14 per cent.

In both the States, the final figures for the voter turnout during the Assembly elections which concluded on Wednesday will increase, officials said as there were still people waiting in lines to cast their votes. Both the States had a single phase polling.

The counting of votes will be on December 11 and results will be declared with those of Rajasthan, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh. While Chattisgarh has already faced polls, Telangana and Rajasthan will see one-day polling on December 7.

In three districts in Madhya Pradesh, where polling ended at 3 p.m., the voter turnout was recorded at 78 per cent, 79.07 per cent and 80.06 per cent respectively, officials said.

In Mizoram the final voter turnout will be available on Thursday as some of the polling stations do not have telecommunication facilities.

MP electorate

Madhya Pradesh which has an electorate of over 5.4 crore saw 2899 candidates fighting for the 230 seats in the State Assembly. There was a 20 per cent jump in polling stations in the State at over 65,000.

In Mizoram, the electorate of 7.7 lakh voted to decide the fate of 209 candidates in the fray for the 40 seats in the assembly.

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) were used in both the states with officials pointing out that in Mizoram EVMs were used for the first time since 2003. Election Commission officials claimed the number of EVMs and Verifiable Voter Paper Audit Trails (VVPAT) that had to be replaced during the assembly elections was among the lowest. Officials claimed that in Madhya Pradesh a little over 200 of the over 65,000 Ballot Units used in the state were replaced.

The authorities seized over ₹ 55.58 crores including ₹ 14.2 crore of cash and 14.2 crore worth of drugs, narcotics in Madhya Pradesh while ₹ 5.39 crore was seized in Mizoram way above the ₹ 92 lakhs seized in the state during the 2013 elections.

In Mizoram elderly people participated in a big way with Commission officials pointing out that a 108 year old voter cast his vote while there were at least two other electors over 100 years old.

Meanwhile, the Commission has written to Twitter and Facebook telling them to observe the provisions of the Representation of the People Act after complaints were received that a political party had used its party symbol on social media to ask people to go out and vote. There are allegations that the Congress used its party symbol on social media.

Three time Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Chouhan, is fighting to ensure that the Bharatiya Janata Party retains power while the opposition led by the Congress is hoping that anti-incumbency in the state will see the BJP being voted out.

In Mizoram, the BJP is hoping to replace the existing Congress government.

Besides, to provide voters the facility to cast their vote without having to stand in a queue, the Chief Electoral Officer of MP,, Bhopal developed Qless mobile appl. Through this App every voter can obtain a prior token for casting his or her vote and can enter the polling booth when their turn comes. This allow them to be at home or else where and reach only when their turn comes rather than wait in a queue, EC officials explained. In MP 2132 First Information Report were lodged in cases relating to violating the Model Code of Conduct. During this elections in the state 1947 polling stations being operated by women were formed.
