The Maharashtra Government has decided to stop issuing new licenses to purse seining type of fishing in the State. This mechanical type of fishing was having an adverse impact on coastal fishing. Studies had also shown that breeding cycles of the fishes were also getting affected.
In this technique, a long rectangular net with a weighted bottom and a buoyant top are used for catching a whole shoal of fish. Two boats are required for managing the nets. A net is closed to form a purse, which prevents the fishes from escaping under the net and they can't get over the floating cork line.
A press statement issued by the Chief Minister’s office said that reduction in purse seining fishing will increase the catch of fishermen, who practice coastal fishing.
