Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), a long-term ally of the Congress Party, has withdrawn its support to the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre and to the Kiran Kumar Reddy Government in Andhra Pradesh. The MIM has one MP in Lok Sabha and seven legislators in the State Assembly.
Assaduddin Owaisi, the MIM chief who represents Hyderabad LS seat, addressed a press conference here on Monday to announce the decision. He has written to President Pranab Mukherjee to inform the party’s decision.
The decision has put the Congress Government in a spot as it is surviving on a wafer-thin margin. It has 155 members in the 294-member House. An independent member also supports the Government. Three of the ruling party legislators (representing Elur, Bobbili and Chintalapudi constituencies) have resigned, announcing support to the YSR Congress Party.
Botsa Satyanarayana, Pradesh Congress Committee chief and Minister for Transport in the State Cabinet, however, has said there was no threat to the Government.
