Prem C Jain, Chairman, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), passed away on September 20 at his residence in New Delhi. He was 82 years old.
Jain was closely associated with CII’s-IGBC from its inception in 2001 and played a vital role in the spread and growth of the 21st century green building movement in India.
Under his guidance and thought leadership, India has built the second largest registered green building footprint in the world, with projects spread across the length and breadth of the country.
As on date, over 4,790 green building projects, including cities, homes, schools, villages and railway stations have adopted IGBC green building rating systems.
Jain emphasised the need and importance of blending India’s ancient architectural practices and cultural ethos with modern technological innovations in the design and construction of green building projects. He had the vision to facilitate 10 billion sq.ft of green building footprint by 2022.
Expressing profound grief over the demise of Jain, Chandrajit Banerjee, Director-General, CII, underlined that without the guidance of Jain, the Indian green building movement would not have gained such momentum and achievements.
His contribution has brought irreversible and positive change to the environment in India. He was a passionate leader, a person who bonded everyone with his vision and a sense of purpose, added Banerjee.
Jain was one of the global experts in air-conditioning and had gained the unique distinction of becoming the first practising engineer in India to have been nominated in 1995 as Fellow of the Ashrae, USA. His Alma Mater, Banaras Hindu University, conferred the IT BHU Alumni Excellence Award upon him in 2008.
Jain obtained his Ph.D in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in the US in 1965, with a perfect GPA of 4.0. He is the founder of Ishrae and Ashrae in India and was the convenor for the National Building Code in India, NBC 2016.
He is the Chairman Emeritus of Aecom India, a global consultancy with over 1,00,000 engineers and architects in 150 countries, with an annual turnover of $20 billion.
