From March 1 you will have to pay more to fly on the Dubai-based Emirates airlines. Emirates operates 185 flights a week to and from 10 Indian cities including Chennai, Thiruvanthapuram, Kozhikode, Hyderabad, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

In a statement to the travel trade sent on Tuesday, the airline said that from March 1 it will be realigning all its first, business and economy class fares. “All existing fares ex-India will be revised upwards,” the statement said without specifying the exact increase in fares.

According to Sharat Dhall, President, Yatra, the increase is about 5 per cent on all three classes, although Mumbai-based travel agents say that the increase is in the 10-15 per cent range. “At the moment no other airlines have reacted to the increase but we need to wait and watch,” Dhall said.

Neetu Singh, Chief Operating Officer of Ezeego1.com, said with the upcoming holiday season, airlines want to cash in on huge demand. This could be a reason for Emirates raising fares. Other airlines will also increase fares in due course, she said.

Pointing out that costs are going up for airlines, Amber Dubey, Partner and India Head, Aerospace and Defense, KPMG, said he expects prices to go up this summer. “There’s a limit to which foreign carriers can absorb the increasing costs,” he said.
