If someone from Ranchi comes to Bangalore to work in the IT industry you won't bat an eyelid, but why would they head here to set up a music company? After all, this erstwhile Pensioner's Paradise and present-day IT capital is certainly not the music capital of India.

“We came here because of the mindset. Bangalore is a clean city. There are genuine people in Bangalore,” Mr Saket Jalan, Director, Sonido, told Business Line . This start-up, which stood out among the IT stalls at the TiE Entrepreneurship Summit in Bangalore thanks to its guitars, was set up in April this year. “We started with an investment of just Rs 60 lakh. After four months of operation, we started making around Rs 45 lakh a month,” he said. Sonido is funded by JGI Ventures of the Jain Group of Institutions, Bangalore, which has incubated 48 institutions.

Apart from selling music instruments, Mr Jalan said he was also interested in music therapy and music lounges. “I'm a certified music therapist and have trained 32,000 people,” he said, adding that music creates positive vibes in a person.

The Sonido Lounge school of music charges Rs 3,000 a month for music lessons. Calling for a holistic view, Mr Jalan said, “We spend around Rs 80 for a cup of coffee, Rs 50,000 for Montessori schools for children. So, why can't the guitar scale up?” He also wants to set up a “jam room” that can host a battle of bands to promote music.
