High fashion is about more than just what label you’re sporting – the secret to getting your look right is also about perfection in the tiniest of details. Like a stylish manicure, for example. Getting your nails done is no longer as simple as choosing a colour that coordinates with your outfit or sticking to classic French tips – your nails are a part of your style statement.

The “Mani-Cam” that’s now a staple at all red carpets from the Oscars to the Grammys is proof of the growing importance of doingyour nails. In addition to the classic “Who are you wearing?”, actresses also got to show off their nails, proving that they really do have this fashion thing figured down to their fingertips.

While neons have become a staple and all shades of red are still a hot favourite, there’s a lot more you can do with your nails – and they’re all inspired by current trends.

Shape up Your natural nail shape depends on your nail bed and could be anything from square to oval to anything in between. But, if you really want to follow in the footsteps – or should we say handprints – of Rihanna and Lady Gaga, the stiletto nail is the only one to have. Filed to sharp, almond-shaped ends, this isn’t the most practical shape but it is definitely the most fashion forward option.

In addition to a sexy shape that’s reminiscent of cat claws, longer nails give you more room to experiment with the other nail trends – think bigger canvas for nail art! If you’re hesitant about the length, stick to the classic square block shape, or file them to a length that works best for you and pick some art to show it off.

Texture time If the runways were all about texture, the nail trends were not far behind. From lattice prints to lace, nails across the ramp were done to reflect the clothes they were accessorising. Models at designer Katherine Polk’s collection for Houghton NYC sported bits of lace pasted over their bare nails, but you don’t have to get that extreme. Just recreate lace-like patterns in contrasting shades, and remember that showing off some natural nail through the pattern is a great idea.

Check patterns were every where this season, nails included, so whether its tartan or gingham, it should definitely find space on your tips. Use finely drawn dots or lines to create a pattern and don’t shy away from colour.

Another trend that is making a big splash is 3D art, which takes texture to a whole new level. Using everything from coloured sparkling stones, like at Jenny Packham, to metallic studs at the base, á la Kate Spade, the idea is to get creative and break the rules. Couture brand Marchesa too pitched in to the trend with their collaboration with Revlon to create 3D Jewel Appliqués that are inspired by the brand’s gorgeous designs. With plenty of gold motifs and diamantes, they seem to hit the texture trend on the head.

Colour me quick All that glitters is in, since the shimmer and shine are all over the place this season. Whatever colour you choose, top it off with a coat of glitter that’s concentrated at the tip and fades towards the base. Try this with shimmer or larger sparkles – either way its all about getting that faded look just right.

Fall colours are across the palate, and while favourites like red are fighting for space with oxblood, and the pale pinks with the nudes, the focus is clearly on the additions that make your tips stand out. The accent nail is bigger than ever, so even you’re opting for a neutral plain colour on all four nails, try a funky unexpected print or embellishment on one nail (middle or ring finger). Or opt for a pop of bright colour over neutral nails – like a diagonal stripe or just the upper band – and you’re good to go.

Another big hit is the half moon trend where the half-moon shape at the base of the nail is highlighted. The Half-Moon Mani, as its coming to be known, is finding takers across the board, with some painting the half moon a bright shade while leaving the rest of the nail in a lighter tone, or vice versa. Alternately use glitter to highlight the half-moon or make it a rough-edged moon for a more punk-inspired look.

Metallics have always found their way into the trend list and this season too they are here to stay, but more of the rough finished shades like bronze and silver. Use them to highlight the very tips or to add some funky prints, as long there’s bling, metallic nails are here to stay.

Nails are clearly the new way to unleash your inner artist and with everything from accent nails to rough-edged half-moons finding favour with the fashionistas, its time to forget about the rules – but mind you, don’t chip those nails!
