A 20-member team from the IAF's 109 Helicopter Unit is on a motorcycle expedition across the State. Headed by the Wing Commander, Mr V.S. Srihari, Commanding Officer of Air Force Station Yelahanka, the expedition will interact with students of local schools and colleges to motivate them to join the Forces, according to an official release.
It will also spread the message of preserving the State's rich heritage, flora and fauna, in particular the Western Ghats. The riders will travel through Mysore, Kodagu, Mangalore, Udupi, Chikmagalur, Hassan, Belur and Halebeedu before ending the ride at Sravanabelagola, covering 1,750 km over the next few days. The expedition is part of ongoing events to mark the golden jubilee of the unit and will cover hills, forests, plantations and heritage sites along its route.
The 109 Helicopter Unit is the only operational twin-engine helicopter unit of the IAF in the South. It has served the southern States during war and in peace, in disaster relief, VVIP transit, and rescue operations.
