Foreign tourist arrivals to India were up 9.2 per cent at 5.11 lakh in May 2015 against 4.68 lakh in May last year, a statement from the Ministry of Tourism said on Monday. Foreign exchange earnings from tourism were up 23.6 per cent at ₹8,877 crore in May 2015 compared with ₹7,184 crore in May 2014. The percentage share of foreign tourists last month among the top 15 source countries was highest from Bangladesh (19.32 per cent), followed by the US (16.99 per cent), UK (7.79 per cent), Malaysia (3.59 per cent), and Sri Lanka (3.54 per cent). In the January-May period this year, foreign tourist arrivals stood at 33.32 lakh, a growth of 3.6 per cent against 32.15 lakh in January-May 2014, the statement added.
