Stopped after the 26/11 terror attack, the annual open sea swimming competition from Sunk Rock to Gateway of India will be held after a gap of four years on February 25.
Over 500 competitors in 10 different categories, including four special events for the physically challenged swimmers, will take part in the Square Off Mumbai Swimmathon, it was announced on Tuesday.
The sea swimming competition is supported by the Maharashtra State government, Mumbai Port Trust, Mumbai Police, Indian Navy and Coast Guard and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and is being held under the auspices of the Maharashtra State Amateur Aquatic Association.
“We are pleased to host this event in association with Square Off (a sports management consulting and training organisation), which has the expertise to conduct a race of this kind. We hope the state government will continue their support and encouragement to host such events, which can surely add to India's medal tally in the Olympics to come,” said the MSAAA secretary, Mr Kishor Vaidya.
He was referring to the 10-km open water race being part of the Olympic medal competitions since 2008 Beijing.
