In a record for any Indian movie, Rajinikanth’s magnum opus 2.0 , the sequel to 2010 mega-hit Enthiran , will open on Thursday in over 10,500 screens worldwide in both 2D and 3D formats. This betters Baahubali-2 The Conclusion , which held the previous record at 9,000 screens.

In India, the film will be screened in about 7,850 screens, of which 5,000 screens are in North India while the five southern States will collectively exhibit it in 2,850 screens. Of these, 850-900 screens are in Tamil Nadu.

The sci-fi thriller, directed by Shankar, also stars Amy Jackson and Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar. It is estimated to have been made at a cost of ₹550 crore, with a major portion of the spend used on visual effects (VFX) by technicians from across the globe.

While Enthiran was shot using 2D camera and rendered to 3D during post-production works, 2.0 was entirely shot using 3D cameras.

“The movie is generating a tremendous amount of curiosity and it is something which will do well not just in Tamil but also in Hindi and it’s a sure blockbluster,” said Kamal Gianchandani, CEO of PVR Pictures. “Almost 75 per cent of PVR’s entire capacity is allocated to 2.0 ,” he added.

Going by the advance booking estimates, the movie is expected to be a tough rival to Baahubali-2 The Conclusion , which holds the box-office record for the highest opening day grosser for any film.

Advance bookings

“We have seen a phenomenal response for advance ticket booking for 2.0 . BookMyShow has sold over 1 million tickets in advance sales across all the three languages and formats, with 3D dominating the sales,” said Ashish Saksena, COO-Cinemas, BookMyShow, in a press statement.

According to media reports, Lyca Productions has already earned about ₹370 crore from advance bookings, satellite rights (sold to Zee for ₹110 crore) and digital rights. Also, it has got an injunction from the Madras High Court to restrain over 12,500 piracy websites from releasing the movie online.
