Vivegam, the Ajith Kumar-starrer, is expected to cross ₹20 crore at the box office on the first day in Tamil Nadu, according to industry reports.

Compare this with Rajinikant’s Kabali grossing over 21 crore on day one, it is par for the course say industry sources.

Apart from the star value, Vivegam has drawn attention as it is the first blockbuster after the implementation of GST and the hike in entertainment tax by the local government.

The spy-thriller set in Eastern Europe also starring Kajal Aggarwal, Akshara Hassan and Vivek Oberoi is directed by Siva and produced by Sathya Jyothi films.

Vivegam was released in over 700 theatres in Tamil Nadu, 300 screens in Kerala and 450 screens in Telangana and Hyderabad. The movie will screened in over 3000 screens world over, which includes 160 screens in the US and 500 screens in Malayasia.

The movie is expected touch ₹35 crore in domestic box office and likely to do well overseas as well. In the US, the movie has recorded the collection of ₹1.38 crore on the first day.

In Tamil Nadu, the movie had a great opening with tickets sold out till Sunday. Ramkumar Nammalvar, Founder, TicketNew, an online ticket booking platform, said online ticket booking for the movie opened last week and were sold out by Tuesday. The platform has sold over 4 lakh tickets across the theatres in its platform in India, he added.

Vivegam is one of biggest releases in the State after the implementation of Goods and Services Tax, post which most theatres saw a slight slump in movie-goers numbers.

Nammalvar said, “This is the much needed push to bring in the mass crowd, which was missing in theatres.”

Given the movie has got mixed-reviews, distributors are concerned. Tirupur Subramani, a distributor based in Coimbatore, said though the response on the first day was exceptional, as one would expect, the same might not translate to rest of week. “It is a wait and watch. We will know on Monday,” he added.
