Streamcast Group, a video streaming platform, laid the foundation stone for its massive data-centre at Sawantwadi, Maharashtra, through its cloud-computing business, Streamcloud.

The facility, the company’s first overseas data centre, will be spread across 12 acres of land.

The company said the centre will see an investment of over ₹2,200 crore in the next 4-5 years. Once fully operational, the data centre would take up power requirement equivalent to that of a city.

“We expect the data centre to be up and running by December this year, by when it would be our largest data-centre operation.

We expect large demand in this region as it is already a high-growth area for us,” said Mark Aldridge, COO, Streamcloud.

“This investment will provide for the local economy as well as put Sawantwadi on the Global Datacentre infrastructure Map,” Aldridge said.

Govt regulation

In the last couple of years, India has become one of the largest data-centre hubs in the world, driven by government regulations that require all financial data of Indian customers to remain within the country.

This has forced companies such as Google, Amazon, Microsoft and IBM to set up their data centres here.

Data centre infrastructure hardware enterprise spending in India is on pace to total $2.7 billion in 2018, according to Gartner.

Cloud would see even faster growth as in 2018 — Gartner estimates the fastest-growing segment of the public cloud market will be infrastructure as a service (IaaS), which, in India, is forecast to total $1 billion, an increase of 46 per cent from 2017.

After the successful launch of its global Data Centre in Malta, Streamcloud expects its Data Centre in India will boost development of developing regions.

Skilling programme

Streamcast Group will also be setting up a vocational centre under the name of SAI Centre of IT Excellence at Sawantwadi, which will offer IT courses for students.

The centre will be launched with the aim to provide the youth of Sindhudurg and Maharashtra with the opportunities to skill themselves in the field of Information Technology and to thereby, generate employment.
