This is with reference to “Tsunami devastates Japan after 8.9 quake” ( Business Line , March 12.) The abuse of nature and its over-exploitation have manifested into what we are paying heavily today. Nature's fury knows no bounds and it has got its own way of balancing things. March 11, 2011, will go down in the history of Japan as the saddest chapter ever, after the man-made disaster at Hiroshima in 1945.
The kind of devastation in terms of earthquake of the incredible magnitude of 8.9 on the Richter scale, ravaging the eastern coast of Japan, is simply terrifying. While the whole world deeply mourns the loss of lives and is ready to extend support, the kind of maturity and calm displayed by the Japanese deserve all praise.
It is also a stark reminder to India to introspect as to how well we are prepared to face such a massive calamity.
Devastation of such type can strike us any time, in any part of the country. It is not the job of government alone; the people must also show their involvement and make disaster management a meaningful exercise.

Farm income
To mobilise resources, the Finance Minister should tax agricultural income too. Income is income, whatever is its source.
Considering the importance of agriculture, more concessions can be granted to the sector, but it need not be totally exempt from income-tax.
