This refers to the editorial “Localising electronics” ( Business Line , July 14). The government decision to grant financial sops to electronic-hardware manufacturers is a welcome move. Though the AP government granted land and sops for establishment of FAB city a few years ago, the projects are still on paper. The government should check implementation of reforms. Universities should set up R&D centres so that human capital can develop.

Collaboration between Indian and foreign entities will enhance development of critical areas. Export-import processes should be hassle-free.

Tax avoidance

With reference to the editorial ‘Go slow on tax avoidance’ ( Business Line , July 16), tax revenue is an important indicator of economic growth. It may be recalled that the Swiss parliament had supported a tax treaty with the US in order to disclose the details of around 4,450 UBS clients who had allegedly hidden money from the US Internal Revenue Service.

Similarly, the Indian government should take effective and urgent steps to regain the black money by forging a proper deal with the Swiss government.

Also, specific anti-tax haven laws could be used for tracing black money.

Hand in hand

It has been reported in the media that the Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar, and Rural Development Minister, Mr Jairam Ramesh, are at loggerheads over the implementation of the MGNREGA. There is a point in Mr Pawar’s criticism of the scheme. While it aims to enhance the infrastructure in rural areas, it has certainly made for fewer farmhands in the agricultural sector. For overall agricultural development, two overlapping portfolios should be held by one individual.
