Flightradar24 : There are more than three million downloads of this app, among the highest for those that track live air traffic. Imagine getting real time information on the movement of an aircraft and if one of them is flying nearby, you just need to point your phone towards the sky and the app will tell you everything about the aircraft: its type, route map, estimated time of arrival, time of departure, speed and altitude.

It also allows you to have a pilot-like experience with a 3D cockpit view. Cool, eh? The app, available both on Android and iPhones, also has customised features such as alerts when a certain plane is in the air.

A must-have app on your mobile if you are a die-hard fan of aviation.

Skyscanner: This app is for those who want to know the cheapest fare available at any given point of time. Like other travel portal apps, Skyscanner filters results by price, cabin class, airline and take-off and landing times.

But unlike other apps, Skyscanner includes high-end flag carriers and charter flights in its search results. It can even give the best deal for last-minute flights or spontaneous getaway. One can buy tickets from this app, which sends a direct link to the airline or the travel agent. There are other features thrown in which makes it pretty attractive. For instance, one can also see prices across a whole week or a month to find the best flight deals. Perhaps its best feature is that even if one doesn’t want to go anywhere, the ‘everywhere’ search function offers instant flight inspiration. You just need to key the favourite departure point and if you are unclear about when to travel, just click on ‘whole month’ or ‘whole year.’ The app will then list down options in price order. Little wonder that Skyscanner has been downloaded 35 million times so far.

FlightView: The app, which is available only on iPhones, is a real time flight tracker and gives status on flight delays. Like FlightRadar24, FlightView also tracks upcoming and in-the-air flights. Moreover, it also gives a traveller status alerts. One can forward itinerary confirmation, emails and FlightView will automatically load them into the app and track them for you.

You can also get information on terminals, gates and baggage claims. The app gives driving directions to the airport and allows you to find alternative flights. It can sync your information between devices and you can add other travel information such as car rentals and hotel reservation numbers.

FlightView also tells which airports are witnessing the biggest delays.

FlightAware : It does exactly what it says and is a very handy, bare bone app. FlightAware reminds you about your flight so that you don’t have to worry about missing one. You just need to punch in your aircraft number and the app will do the tracking. And that is not all. It will provide notifications on flight departure/arrival information, cancellations, delays, diversions and gate changes.

Our favourite is FlightRadar24. It satisfies every airline enthusiasts dream to know which aircraft is flying above It fulfils a childhood fantasy.
