Employee tracking apps are not new, but Walmart’s recent patent for audio surveillance technology is raising eyebrows. The retail giant has just won a patent for an audio sensor that can listen to workers’ conversations with customers at checkout.

Although it is just a patent right now, it is a sign of how companies are thinking about audio data to track employees’ productivity.

Several customer care centres already record conversations to monitor performance of their employees. But the Walmart tech, which can capture sounds like beeps and rustling noises, enters physical realms.

50-million club

Professional networking platform LinkedIn has crossed the 50 million-member mark in India. In the last four years, the India membership base of the platform has doubled and the country is LinkedIn’s fastest growing market outside the US. LinkedIn has over 562 million members globally. According to the platform, the top searched job on the platform in India was for analyst/associate consultant at KPMG, followed by Mechanical Engineer at Tata Motors. The top sought after skill by recruiters was Microsoft Office.
