Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group has accelerated its expansion by signing 12 new hotels in 2017.

Raj Rana, Chief Executive Officer, South Asia, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group, said the group has 85 hotels in operation in the country out of its current portfolio of 140. “The remaining ones are under development. We are focussed on strengthening our presence in the South, particularly in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. We have signed a new hotel every four weeks and opened one every two months.”

Rana was in Hosur to oversee an upcoming project. Speaking to BusinessLine over phone, he said the group is now eyeing smaller cities such as Hosur, Visakhapatnam, Udagamandalam, and Coorg to establish its presence. “A hotel at Tirupathi is on the cards, but in early stage of consideration. We have initiated discussion in Madurai and Tiruchi as well,” he added.

On the Hosur property, he said: “Radisson Resort at Hosur is a greenfield project coming up on a 12-acre land, with 120 guest rooms and suites. It is slated to open in 2018.”

On growth, he said the last five quarters have been extremely good for the hotel industry. “Demand has always grown. Excess supply of inventory (rooms) has been absorbed. The average occupancy touched 70 per cent after many years.”

According to him, the hospitality sector has emerged strong after demonetisation, rollout of GST and liquor ban. “New hotels are coming up despite such hiccups, but efficiency has to be improved,” he said, adding “I feel that we will be able to hold fort the next one-two years.”
