The Haryana District Court has released 77 out of the 147 Maruti Suzuki workers arrested in 2012 for allegedly provoking agitation in the Manesar plant.

The company’s general manager Awanish Kumar Dev had been killed in the violence at the factory.

Representing the arrested workers, Senior Advocate Vrinda Grover had appealed for their release last year. The Court on Tuesday directed to release them, union leader Kuldeep Jhangu said.

Grover had contended that the prosecution failed to produce a single witness against them. The Supreme Court had on January 30 given two weeks to the Haryana Government to respond as to why the workers should not be granted bail.

Jhangu said the union will ask the company to take back these people on job.

However, Maruti Suzuki is unlikely to take back such workers. The company declined to comment. The Supreme Court had last month allowed bail to two of the 147 jailed workers.
