Canon India is widening its connect with camera lovers in the country, to enhance the household penetration of compact digital cameras, which is abysmally low against other developed countries.

The digital camera penetration ratio among the mid-income families in India is only 35 per cent, whereas in Japan, it was 300 per cent with an average three digital cameras in a family. In India, it was one camera for a three-member family, said Kazutada Kobayashi, President and CEO, Canon India.

The camera penetration in the US was 120-150 per cent, while the figure stood at 200 per cent in Europe. Moreover, all the developed countries have over 100 per cent camera penetration ratio, he said, quoting a survey carried out by the company.

Kobayashi attributed the late entry of digital cameras in India after 2007 as a reason for the slow market progress. “It will take some time to take off the digital camera wave in the country, even as the market offers a tremendous potential for players like Canon to explore it fully,” he told BusinessLine .

However, he went on to add that the sales of Canon’s small compact point and shoot camera have shaken a bit leading to a 30 per cent shrinkage in the wake of the booming smartphone sales. At the same the time digital SLR camera business has not been impacted, instead, it registered a 30 per cent growth, thanks to frequent customer migration from smartphones to more advanced SLR cameras for shooting quality pictures.

Kobayashi was here to inaugurate the company’s 7th installation of digital photo printing Dreamlabo 5000.

Canon, which completed 20 years of operations in India, has generated a turnover of ₹2,600 crore in the last fiscal, witnessing a double digit growth. The company hopes to replicate the performance this year with more focus on business of copier, personal printer, commercial printers.

Dedicated shop

As part of the strategy to bring customers to its fold, the company has started setting up dedicated shop Canon Image Square for selling products.

“We have already opened 250 shops throughout the country and the number will touch 290 by the end of this year,” he said, adding that plans are afoot to introduce High Zoom ratio and underwater camera to revive the market.
