Commuting problems of Mumbaiites staying in the eastern suburbs are expected to ease by Christmas, with the completion of the Rs 847-crore eastern freeway road project.

A partially elevated 16.8 km road will connect P D'Mello Road in south Mumbai with Ghatkopar in the suburbs.

A portion of the road would be built of stilts and it will pass through the Mumbai docks area. The project is being executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

In the first leg, an elevated 9.3 km road will connect P D'Mello Road to the Anik-Panjarpol Link road.

In the second leg, a twin tunnel will connect Anik area near Sion to the Panjarpol-Ghatkopar Link Road and then onwards it will link Panjarpol to Ghatkopar with a regular road.

This is the second major transport project in Mumbai, which would be completed by the year end.

Earlier, the MMRDA had announced that by December, the first phase of monorail would be open for commuters.

According to Ms Ashwini Bhide, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, the elevated road will provide faster connectivity between the city, suburbs and main land.

The public transport and intercity buses towards Pune, Goa and Bangalore will be able use the eastern freeway, avoid congested roads of Mumbai city and save at least sixty minutes of commuting time, she said.

Ms Bhide said the express bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport Undertaking between the city and eastern suburbs will also be able to use this link more effectively,

The elevated road will decongest the regular Mumbai docks road, which will help faster movement of heavy goods vehicles, she said.
