Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) on Wednesday received the first parcel of crude oil at New Mangalore Port premises for delivery into Mangaluru cavern of ISPRL (Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd).
The Member of Parliament from Dakshina Kannada, Nalin Kumar Kateel, recieved the first parcel of 0.26 million tonnes of Iran mix crude from VLCC (very large crude carrier) -- mt Dino – for delivery into ISPRL cavern.
The Mangaluru cavern of ISPRL has a capacity to store around 1.5 mt of crude oil.
The crude oil storage facilities are constructed in underground rock caverns. The Mangaluru cavern of ISPRL was constructed at a cost of Rs 1227 crore.
Speaking on the occasion, Rajan Pillai, Chief Executive Officer of ISPRL, said that the crude is being filled in Mangaluru cavern on a trial basis as some tests have to be conducted before the formal commissioning.
