Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) carried out a “Full-scale Night Mock Emergency Exercise (aircraft crashes at the airport)” on March 9 using a real aircraft for the purpose.
The two and half hour exercise involved over 500 participants from multiple agencies and volunteers, according to a statement.
The mock scenario involved an Airbus-320 type of aircraft of IndiGo Airlines, the partner airline in the exercise. It experienced hydraulic problems and crashed on the runway while landing at the airport with passengers and crew on the board. The Air Traffic Controller immediately activated the crash alarm and declared ‘Crash Action’.
The Airport Rescue and Firefighting Services (ARFFS) immediately responded to the call and reached at the crash site and started the exercise. The scenario depicted passengers with severe injuries, minor injuries, casualties and un-injured.
Telangana State Police and Fire department, AAI, Staff of R.R. Dist Collector’s office, hospitals, ambulance services, Telangana State Disaster Response, Immigration, Customs, CISF and other concerned departments participated in the exercise to study the preparedness.
The mock emergency exercise which started at 2300 hrs concluded at 0130 hrs, without any disruption and inconvenience to normal airport operations.
