The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has busted a bribery racket to get income-tax relief. It arrested four persons in Chennai and Mumbai on Sunday, including senior income-tax officials.

“In a 24-hour multi-city operation, which is still continuing, the CBI has busted a bribery racket involving senior income-tax officers in Chennai and Mumbai, besides chartered accountants acting as middlemen and businessmen seeking income-tax relief,” a statement issued by the agency said.

CBI sources said Salong Yaden (Joint Commissioner of Income-Tax, Range 6, Chennai), Sanjay Bhandari and Shreyas Bhandari, both CAs, and Hitesh Kawad, Managing Director of SPG & RG, a real-estate firm based in Chennai, have been arrested. Several other senior income-tax officers from Mumbai and Chennai are under the scanner, they said.

CBI officials searched 16 locations in Chennai and Mumbai and recovered over ₹1 crore in cash and ornaments. They also seized 16 laptops,13 CPUs, nine mobile phones, three iPads, property papers and other incriminating documents. The search is still on, the sources said.
