IIM-Ahmedabad’s technology business incubator, Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE), on Monday announced the launch of its Healthcare Accelerator 2016 in partnership with The Dasra Girl Alliance.

The three-month-long programme is being launched as a part of CIIE’s Bharat Innovation Fund and is supported by C-CAMP (an initiative of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India), and InnoVen Capital.

The accelerator programme aims to identify potential start-ups that are embarking on breakthrough routes towards the healthcare industry’s advancements, particularly in the areas of medical devices, healthcare IT, and biotech, said Salim J. Vali, Vice-President (Investments), CIIE.

The start-ups that are trying to fill in the gaps of India’s healthcare industry face stark conditions. At the early stages, they encounter critical and inhibiting risks of scarce capital and non-availability of intensive mentoring. This healthcare accelerator endeavours to create a positive environment for the start-ups and consequently empower the surrounding ecosystem, he said.

The accelerator programme will offer mentoring and individualised guidance through its programme mentors (industry experts and thought leaders) and partners. The programme mentors include experts such as Prof K. V. Ramani and Prof Piyush Sinha of IIM Ahmedabad.

CIIE has been a front-runner in fuelling entrepreneurship since its inception and has designed this mentorship-driven accelerator based on its experience of accelerating more than 500 start-ups. Interested entrepreneurs and start-ups can apply online (http://healthcare.ciie.co) by March 20, 2016, according to a press release here.

The accelerator programme will culminate in a Demo Day, wherein the programme start-ups present their start-up to India’s leading investors to raise funds and build business relationships. Alongside, CIIE will also offer seed investment commitment of up to Rs 70 lakhs to two start-ups that meet CIIE’s criteria of ‘investible’.

Dasra is India's leading strategic philanthropy foundation working with philanthropists and social entrepreneurs to create large-scale social change. Launched in 2013 in collaboration with USAID, Kiawah Trust and the Piramal Foundation, the Dasra Girl Alliance is a multi-year Rs 250-crore initiative to shape an environment that invests in the potential of adolescent girls as agents of change.
