There has been a steady decline in enrolment of research scholars in the field of science & technology in the past three years, the Minister of State for S&T, Y S Chowdary, informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply.
The number of research fellowships awarded through CSIR-UGC National Eligibility Test has declined in the past three years -- from 2,532 in 2013-14 to 2,251 in 2014-15 and 2,369 in 2015-16, he said.
The Minister said in 2014, the Department of S&T had enhanced the rate of stipend for research scholars under the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
“No additional budgetary allocation was provided to take care of the increase in fellowship amount,” he said, adding that the number of fellowships under various schemes was curtailed from 749 in 2013-14 to 445 in 2014-15 and only 291 in 2015-16.
