The National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRD & PR) and Centre for Sustainable Agriculture (CSA) is holding a two-day national meet to discuss the agrarian crisis on May 21 and 22.

K Suman Chandra, a Professor at the NIRD & PR said that the meet would discuss policy perspectives and State response to agrarian crisis and farm distress. The meet will be held at NIRD campus at Rajendranagar.

“The share of agriculture in the national GDP has decreased to 18 per cent in 2007, and subsequently to 14 per cent in 2011. But there is not much change in the number of people depended on agriculture. The sector continues to provide livelihood support to more than two-thirds of the total population in India,” Suman Chandra said.

The slowdown in performance of the sector during the past couple of years is a cause of concern in the overall agenda for food and income security. More than 80 per cent of the farmers, mostly with marginal and small holdings, depend on agriculture as the primary activity and are highly vulnerable to multiple risks.
