The Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam have allied to face the coming elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad who met with the DMK supremo M Karunanidhi in Chennai today, told media persons that the DMK and the Congress have decided to face the coming elections as allies.
This marks the revival of an alliance between the two major parties which were partners in the 2011 Assembly elections but parted ways in 2013 ahead of the Parliamentary elections.
Speaking to media persons after an hour-long meeting with Karunanidhi at his residence, Azad said both the parties’ leadership have decided to work together. The Congress will support the DMK come to power in the State.
On sharing seats and power, he said there is time yet to work out the details. For now it is important that both, the Congress, a national party with a long history, and the DMK one of the oldest and important regional party have decided to work together.
The DMK as the principle member of the alliance will also decide on inducting more partners, he said.
To a question on the change in the political scene between 2013 when the DMK had parted ways with the Congress and now, Azad said political `compulsions and pressures’ dictate the formation of alliances. The DMK has always been a `dependable’ ally, he said.
DMK treasurer, MK Stalin said the alliance between the Congress and the DMK has been finalised. Further details of the alliance will be worked out later, he said.
On the possibility of the Vijayakanth-led DMDK participating in the alliance, he said the DMK-leader Karunanidhi had already extended an invitation. Further details will be worked out in time as the elections are yet to be announced.
