Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said he sought votes with development of West Bengal as the priority.

Reiterating that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was the only credible alternative, he claimed the Congress, the Left and Trinamool have failed to bring about development and corruption-free governance in the State.

“I seek votes with development of the State being my priority. I have three priorities here – development, faster development and all-round development,” he said.

“You have given a chance to the Congress, the Left and even the TMC. Give us a five-year period. I promise to bring about a change,” Modi said, during a rally at Howrah, Kolkata’s twin city across the river Hooghly.

Madhya Pradesh revival

He referred to the financial turnaround story of Madhya Pradesh and how its fortunes changed with a BJP-led government.

“Madhya Pradesh was a BIMARU State, low on development indices. But since the BJP came to power there, its economic revival has been phenomenal. It is no more considered amongst the BIMARU (States low on development),” he said. Earlier in day, the Prime Minister had held a similar rally in Basirhart, 70 km north of Kolkata. The lone BJP MLA in the State, Samik Bhattacharya, is from Basirhat Dakshin.

Both Howrah and Basirhat go to polls on April 25, and the BJP is fancying its chances in these areas.

Reigning corruption

Modi yet again directed his attack on corruption in the ruling Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee’s silence on the same.

Referring to the alleged Narada sting operation and the involvement of TMC leaders, the Prime Minister said, “They (TMC leaders) aren’t even ashamed of accepting money. Their reactions have been as though they are accustomed to taking money like this.”

Flyover tragedy

In yet another scathing reference, he pointed out that the collapse of the Vivekananda flyover and subsequent deaths all have been because of corruption in the ruling party.

“Didi you were always against corruption. You took to the streets on the issue. Why this change in you now?” he questioned.

He even questioned as to why the multi-crore Saradha scam accused were being shielded.
