The use of satellite technology and smartphones in the recently launched Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana will be of great use in its implementation, according to PI Sreevidya, Chief Executive Officer, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat.
Speaking at the launch of the Yojana at Krishi Vijnana Kendra (KVK) here on Wednesday, she said that these technologies will help assess crop loss or damage, and settle insurance claims quickly for farmers.
The new insurance scheme also covers post-harvest losses. The premium to be paid by farmers has been made affordable. Both the Centre and State governments share a major portion of the insurance premium, she said.
Nalin Kumar Kateel, Member of Parliament from Dakshina Kannada, hoped that the wild animals attack on farmland will be included under the scheme. Many farmers in Sullia area of Dakshina Kannada district are facing problems from elephants. The wild elephants that enter the farms and arecanut plantations and damage them completely, he said.
HR Yogesh, Deputy Director of Karnataka Horticulture Department, Dakshina Kannada, said the district has commercial crops such as arecanut, coconut, cashew and pepper in good number. Thesewill be covered under the weather-based crop insurance scheme of the Centre.
A district-level committee will decide on fixing insurance premiums for these crops, he said.
Shivakumar Magada, head of KVK in Mangaluru, requested the farmers to avail themselves of the benefit of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana.
