SAIL is in talks with Kobe Steel Japan for Phase-2 of the revival work at Jagdishpur SAIL Unit (JSU).
The two companies are in discussion for the second phase of the project which includes a 1,000 MW gas-based power plant with an investment of Rs 2,500 crore and a steel plant based on direct reduced iron (DRI) technology that would take about three years to complete, according to SAIL Chairman, Mr C. S. Verma.
Feasibility study
A Joint Task Force Team has already been set up for doing the feasibility of the project and the team is likely to submit its report by March 2011.
The first phase of the revival of JSU, which is the erstwhile Malvika Steel acquired by SAIL in 2009, is already on with an investment of Rs 100 crore. The new Steel Minister, Mr Beni Prasad Verma, reviewed the progress of the ongoing work at JSU and expressed satisfaction at the pace of the work. Phase-1 of the revival project proposed to set up four main units.
Two of these units — a warehouse with a capacity of 12,000 tonnes per annum and a Galvanised Sheet Corrugation unit with 13,000 tonnes per annum capacity — are in the final stages and would be commissioned soon.
Work on two more units under the current phase is on. A TMT bar mill with a capacity of 150,000 tonnes per annum and a Crash Barrier Manufacturing unit of 10,000 tonnes per annum capacity is also under construction and work is ongoing as per schedule.
The target date for completion of phase-1 is November 2011.
