Medical condition of three of the 12 workmen, who were hospitalized here after they sustained serious burns in the Wednesday mishap at the Mundra power plant of Adani Power Ltd, continued to be ‘extremely critical”, sources said here on Friday.

A total of 12 workmen were being treated in an ICU at a private hospital here. Of them, condition of four was described as “stable” whereas eight were being treated in an ICU. But toll may rise as the condition of three of them was stated to be “extremely critical” as they had received over 90 per cent burns.

Altogether 21 workmen were injured in the accident. Eight of them with “nominal injuries” were provided first-aid at Mundra itself while 13 others were shifted to Ahmedabad for treatment. One of them was “brought dead” at the hospital. All of these workmen were said to be of non-Gujarati origins.

An Adani Power spokesman had said on Thursday that the next of kin of the deceased, Bhagwan Chaudhary, would be provided compensation as per the company rules.

These workmen at the 4,600 MW coal-fired thermal power plant at Mundra in Kutch district had sustained burns when hot water got splashed from the vent of a flash tank during start-up of a unit after a two-day shut-down. “During the start-up, some steam is normally allowed to vent,” the company said, adding the unit was shut down after the accident.

The company has constituted a multi-disciplinary, cross-functional team of experts to investigate the incident and submit report within 10 days.
