Hit by floods in Kerala and heavy rains in other parts of the country, Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) has reported decline in domestic sales of passenger vehicles in August by 3.6 per cent year-on-year (YoY) to 1,45,895 units compared with 1,51,270 units in the same month last year.

Exports during the month also declined by more than 10 per cent YoY to 10,489 units against 11,701 units in August 2017.

"Sales during the month were adversely affected due to severe floods in Kerala and heavy rains in other parts of the country," the company said in a statement today.

During the month, the company had sold 71,364 units of compact segment (like Celerio, Swift, Baleno, Dzire), down 3.6 per cent, compared with 74,102 units in the corresponding month last year.

Sales of utility vehicles (like S-Cross, Vitara Brezza) also declined by more than 16 per cent YoY to 17,971 units in August compared with 21,442 units in August last year.

However, the country's largest passenger car maker saw a positive growth in its mini segment (Alto, WagonR) to 35,895 units from 35,428 units in August 2017.

Helped by the launch of its refreshed version, sales of its mid-size sedan Ciaz also grew more than 8 per cent to 7,002 units last month against 6,457 units in the corresponding month last year.

The company had sold 1,805 units of its light commercial vehicle 'Super Carry' during the month against 730 units in August 2017. Overall, Maruti Suzuki India had sold 1,47,700 units of vehicles in the domestic market during August, down 2.8 per cent, compared with 1,52,000 units in the corresponding month previous year.
